great news
I just got my car tested at the smog certification “Test Only” place as requested by the California DMV. “Test Only” means that it costs more and that you may have been singled out as a gross-poluter. The fellow at the test center also told me that they(California?) are moving over to a strictly “Test Only” process. Not sure about all the specifics behind that but basically it’s not cheap to get tested at this place so I’m guessing someone is making money on this.
The great news:
My car failed the test due to exceeding the emission level during the 15 mph test and an ignition timing issue. To me this would indicate that expensive repairs will ensue. Basically I’m really excited because now I’m not only looking into financial assitance for my healthcare needs, I also get to investigate the possibilities of qualifying for repair assistance to satisfy my auto registration requirements. I probably just barely exceed the limits for either of these programs and should look into selling my car and moving to a commune that practices holistic healing. Nnnnng.

The Oldsmobile I am looking to unload would probably have me in jail right now, were I driving in California.
Likewise, it’s stupid that they regulate what comes out of a car but not what goes in. Meaning, they don’t impose fines on SUV-driving fools who consume more than their fair share of natural resources. I think they should regulate consumption for non-commercial vehicles, have a sliding license/tab fee scale that’s keyed to fuel efficiency and vehicle value, and, and … hmmm …
