the sky is -orange- sienna!

It seems everything my dad says ends up coming true or being corroborated in some way by someone around me a few days later. The latest bit of info came in the form of a birthday phone call from my parents where my dad asked me if I was seeing smoke. He was referring to the recent fire in Camp Pendleton up the coast. I told him I was quite a ways away but I drive past there on the way to Los Angeles. He also mentioned something about the Santa Anna winds which I didn’t really fathom at the time.

On Saturday Chako mentioned something about the Santa Anna winds and how it was supposed to “happen” this weekend. I think it was supposed to bring a good day at the beach or something.

Late last night as we were driving a friend home from the Kid Koala – Short Attention Span Theater show and I noticed these fuzzy things floating in front of the headlamps. I kept asking, “What is that shit!?” and Chako suggested it might be pollen. Not happy with that answer I went to bed completely baffeled.

This morning Chako woke me up and told me to look out the window. The sky – for quite a while now – has been totally orange. More of a sienna or orange grey really. I had to take some pictures. One happened to snap the flash off and it came out blurry like those auto-focus pictures you take when it is really snowy. I suddenly saw one of those mysterious floating flakes again and looked down at the cars in the alley. Nestled in all the crevices was a fair amount of salt and pepper flakes of ash.

The Santa Anna winds coupled with the fires have joined forces to give Hillcrest (and possibly the greater San Diego area) skys a murky, spooky, Halloween-themed hue. Oh those poor auto enthusiasts! Think of the business the local car washes will be getting. I need to stay tuned to the Eldon book of knowledge a little more attentively. My trick knee is definitely not as highly tuned to meterology as my dad is.

Looks like it’s goth day at the beach.

  1. Hey Eric. I was thinking about you and Chako in the midst of the fire blazing through southern Cali. I assumed you would write about it in you journal and I was right! Just what I was wondering. Take care of yourselves. Hope everythings ok!
