your mixer’s older than Jesus

Guess what Phong… It’s not where you come from, it’s where you’re going. And Jesus don’t care about old.

... DJ Dopey rocked a first-place routine in the main DJ showcase. He became only the second Canadian turntablist in DMC history (Montreal’s A-trak was first) to win the status of No. 1 in the world, walking away with the much-coveted Technics gold-plated mixer, turntables and records. The 24-year-old Mississauga resident worked hard for the recognition that’s now come his way.

Inspired by a love of hip-hop and the film Juice, DJ Dopey, a.k.a. Jon Ryan Santiago, started teaching himself to manipulate records and use turntables as instruments at the age of 16. For heads keeping track, he started off with one old Technics table found at a garage sale, one belt-driven Gemini and a ScratchMaster mixer—not a glamorous or high-functioning set-up, but one he put to great use.

Okay, so he didn’t keep the ScratchMaster, but I know some heads who still have one around just to get that “ScratchMaster sound” ya dig? I’m still saving up for the upgrade. I suppose a DJ needs gain and eq right? All in good time.

  1. Update this page slacker. Oh, and your mixing board. Let’s see, $20000 in records and $20 dollars for a mixer? That’s like buying pez in super-bulk with no dispensor, or buying that milkcarton looking pack of beebees without the gun. Plus you have those neato newish technics with no dead spot but wouldm’t pony up for a mixer that didn’t fizz and crackle (I know, I’m the guy who first modified it with a cocktail straw so the left channel didn’t short). Jesus man, it’s been 10 years since I found that thing under der tannenbaum. might as well go for the two pencils, rubberband and lobster claws model of dj setup and keep it real
