Just for the record: Bootney Farnsworth is now at the helm of a Tascam XS-8. (And at 1/5 the price of a Rane TTM56. Everybody Screeeeeeaaaaaam!) It is true. I can now, indeed, cut the midrange and drop the bass. A moment of silence for the Gemini Scratchmaster.
...
I used to rock them tapes.

  1. What the hell is that thing? It looks like it came from the back corner of a radio shack. Very disapointing. very very very tsk . . .

  2. If you knew anything about mixers at all, you’d know that I got an amazing mixer for a bargain basement price. Basically this thing is an Ecler mixer that was produced for Tascam. There is no direct equivalent in the Ecler line but to summarize the features:

It’s Ecler’s top of the line HAK 360 scratch mixer without the magnetic “Eternal” crossfader. The channel(line) faders and cross faders on the XS-8 are all identical Ecler 45mm Pro Faders, which is what the HAK 360 uses on the channel faders. Those are comparable to the VCA faders on those mangy Vestax mixers and all line and cross faders are adjustable and reversable. You’d do yourself a favor if you dropped those second hand Vestax mixers and picked up one of these (currently) bargain high-end mixers because the sound on the Ecler’s is purported to be superior. But what would I know… I rocked a Gemini Scratchmaster for so long any new mixer would sound good. ANYWAY – I prefer the color scheme on this thing to the Ecler models due to my bombshelter, atomic-age, RadioShack-loving, sensibilities. Low-key quality. (and not quality with a K.)

  3. When I worked the faders for the first time, and didn’t hear that “beach-sand-meets-molars” sound, I almost dropped a load. Hugely cool. I wonder, though, how your (future) coffin will accomodate those side-mounted knobs and switches. Now that YeahYeah mentions it, it does look something like my Radio Shack 2-channel microphone mixer, acquired from the property pile abandoned by a fugitive skinhead oh so long ago. Still, it’s got the spice.

  4. could fabricate some wicked-nice slide-lock tabs to jack the mixer to the proper elevation, then drop back into the coffin. wingnuts included.

  5. it just occurred to me that the knobs are actually grey wirenuts with an indicator line painted on them. very thrifty!
