new new home

So we were both stressed last night with the unsettling fact that our new home was college style (shabby, no closets, previously inhabited by rockers/hippies), of questionable security, slightly undersized and not available until mid september. The place has its charms of course, but... Other worry involved how much stuff we (though mostly it is me) have and the fact that we’d have to ante up a big chunk of rent to our current landlord for the extra September days. Chako forced herself to sleep with little further discussion and proceeded to dream of a newer, larger, upstairs apartment with a garage. I tossed and turned for many many minutes paralysed by Gehner Worry ™ cycling my mind through the labyrinth of choices and actions which had led us up to this point, trying to analyse whether or not optimum choices were made placing us in the best possible current scenario given the present set of variables. Conscious thought eventually petered out.

Morning comes. Gehner Worry ™ begins percolating. Chako keeps her dreams to herself while I poke and prod her about getting up and at ‘em. We begin to plan our day which involved making our future residence concrete. The morning is grey paralleling our somber mood. The phone rings.

The woman explains she has an apartment available and she has just gotten back from being out of town. It is at a location that we were very interested in though much mystery about the actual apartment (price, size, condition, date available) hung in the air. Asking no questions we arranged an appointment ASAP – luckily she could be there in 30 minutes.

Awaiting our ridiculous nervousness was (is that a fireplace?) a remarkably well sized and un-shabby, upstairs apartment with nicely sized closets (one walk in!?) and two bathrooms. Then I realized the price could be astronomical… it was only $55 dollars more than the shabby, downstairs college-cube. And it has a garage? And a parking spot behind the garage!? Laundry in the complex (just down our stairs) ... But it’s slightly more than the other place we’ve been approved for. You can lower the rent slightly? Oh my no, we’d never mention that to the other residents. Please yes where can we sign what can we do…

Chako and I will be slightly upset tomorrow if something changes on Monday but, if all goes well we will have a new (and luxurious) place to live on the 19th.

We are fortunate and blessed and continue to stumble on our merry way.

And WE DON’T HAVE TO LIVE IN A SHITHOLE!!!

A mad, big, lovely shoutout to Jennifer for giving us a new new home.
(Chako thinks it was the asian connection that truly cemented the deal. I don’t care how it happened but that it did. I’m also giving my guardian angel posse big cheesy smiley smiles.)

And a reminder to all those folks who were planning to visit or who want to visit in the future: Come on by. (If all goes well, of course) WE WON’T BE LIVING IN A SHIT HOLE!

Apologies to the delicate and modest sensibilities out there for my harsh phraseology.

postscript: HINDSIGHT—> Should we have been a bit less optimistic about finding a place when our landlord said he’d decided to sell the place and he thought the market would be solid in August and September? Should we have pictured the liquid and turbulent seller’s market that was about to tear us to shreds along with the rest of the sardines? Should we harbor uncomfortable feelings towards the owner of our current aparment for heaving us into the nasty fray which leaves girls in Pacific Beach property management offices whimpering and in tears, wondering how they can find a home. Who knows, but isn’t there someting in the bible like: Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord. Definitely not my favorite verse or anything, but…

  1. reminds me of the first place we looked at in Wicker park, the one with the “Poop Deck”. You were so damn funny, asking all these questions about what type of heat it had, and detailed legal questions about the lease and deposit, the whole time the wretched stench of dog fecese littered the air and carpet bombed my olfactories.
