a new study reports that…

I’ve been meaning to make this entry for about a month now. While I was at our new apartment complex “meet and greet the new neighbors” cookout, some conversation bubbled up having to do with all the alcoholic libations being enjoyed. Someone mentioned a study done that a certain amount of wine is really good for the body or that the intake of wine was scientifically shown to contribute to an individual’s health or something like that. Someone brought up the fact that the study was invariably performed in France. Where else would a study such as that, after it is publicized, contribute to the econmic well being of major industries? I offered that Wisconsin probably has more than its share of pro-cheese experiments on scientific record.

It was agreed that these self serving scientific studies crop up all over the place, generally benefitting whomever or whatever entity/country was funding or organizing the study. Because these studies are “scientific” they can be covered by the right media outlet at the right time and do “good” for all those that are thereupon enlightened while promoting the desired reactions benefitting those involved in the impetus of the study.

I think it would be a good idea to keep some kind of arbitral record or score of scientific studies to keep an eye on funds and effort spent in these less than impartial pursuits.

My original post was intended to be inline with a more recent scientific finding listed on M.I.T.’s blogdex that must have been subject to a certain amount of public scrutiny. The headline? “Blondes ‘to die out in 200 years’” The story(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2284783.stm) had such frightening predictions as: “The last natural blondes will die out within 200 years, scientists believe… Researchers predict the last truly natural blonde will be born in Finland – the country with the highest proportion of blondes… But they say too few people now carry the gene for blondes to last beyond the next two centuries. ”

The origin of the study?
Germany.

I’m sure there are much more heinous and focused agendas in the grand halls of science but what are we communicating with that wonderful mechanism known as “news?” I think the stories are really old.

Sub Question: Does cheese really go bad or does it just age?
